Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum
The Rhythm Night Club Memorial Museum commemorates the victims and survivors of one of the deadliest fires in U.S. history. In December 1940 the Walter Barnes Orchestra of Chicago, considered on a par with Count Basie and other great musicians, came to Natchez to play at the Rhythm Night Club. For many local African-Americans, it was their first dance. For some it would be their last. Moss used to decorate the club caught fire and with only one exit, hundreds of party goers were trapped.
Built on the site of the club at 5 St. Catherine Street, the museum is a project of Monroe and Betty Sago who have spent 20 years collecting articles and photographs of this historic event plus interviews with survivors. They continue to acquire new artifacts weekly.
Open Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm and at other times by appointment. Adults $7. Children $3.50. To receive tickets, print invoice and present at Natchez Pilgrimage Tours counter at the Visitor Center, 640 S. Canal Street.
